The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate that had been targeting rural banks across multiple regions of the country.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno announced the breakthrough at a press conference at the National Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, describing the operation as a “major breakthrough” in the Service’s ongoing crackdown on organised armed robbery groups.
Police had been tracking a disturbing pattern of coordinated attacks on rural banks over the past year.
“After analysing data and conducting surveillance in collaboration with credible informants, we were able to track down the syndicate,” IGP Yohuno said.
The operation, which spanned five regions — Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti — covered towns including Esereso Adagya, Ejisu Achiaakrom, Atonsu-Kyirapatre, Ahwia-Zongo, Aputuogya-Abuontem, Kaase-BOST, Asuofua, Atonsu-Monaco, Pakyi, Obuasi, and Buoho near Kronum.
During the raids, 10 suspects were arrested, while three gang members were killed in a gunfight with police. A manhunt is ongoing for the remaining members. Authorities recovered 14 weapons, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, pistols, and a single-barrel firearm, as well as ammunition, vehicles, and mobile phones.
IGP Yohuno commended the Ashanti Regional Police Commander and his intelligence team for their role in the operation and thanked the public for providing critical information. “We will continue to make life uncomfortable for criminal elements in our society. We will pursue them until they are brought to justice,” he warned.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to rooting out armed robbery gangs and urged continued cooperation from citizens.
