Ho braces for mega yam hailing carnival

Ho, the capital of the Volta Region is preparing for this year’s Asogli Carnival, annual street procession that totally shuts down commute.

Called the “teyuyru” - yam hailing, the event celebrates the maturity of the new yam, which has significance in the historical heritage of the people of Asogli.

The hailing, scheduled for Friday, September 26, 2025, is said to be the main highlight of the Asogli Te Za, annual festival of people of Ho, and tens of thousands of naives are expected to make their way there from all over the country and beyond.

Among them are hundreds of photographers and tourists coming to catch the glamour of the African traditional parade.

The procession emanates at sundown from a shrine at the Ho Central Market, where traditional priests perform rites to outdoor the new yam.

Accompanied by warriors of the Asogli State, the root tuber, a popular staple among native African communities, is carried out and paraded.

People hoot away at hunger as they follow the new yam through the regional capital, and the crowd grows until entire streets are filled.

People in all forms of traditional regalia and costumes join in making the carnival one of the biggest such outpourings in the Region, and the Asogli Te Za one of the most popular annual festivals.

Other notable activities of the Te Za Festival includes a women’s day celebration, an anti-corruption day celebration, and the Summit of Ewe Chiefs.

Togbe Afede, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli will sit in State on Friday, October 03, and host the grand durbar the next day at the Ho Jubilee Park.
