President nominates new Chief Justice as predecessor heads to apex court over sack

President John Mahama has nominated Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the country’s next Chief Justice.

The nomination comes barely a day after the erstwhile Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, filled a writ at the Supreme Court challenging her removal.

Justice Torkonoo had been suspended by President Mahama for stated misbehaviour, a sack that sought to rattle the nation along its political divide.

The nominated Justice, said to be the most senior on the Judicial Council, already was acting as CJ following the removal of the then Chief in April 2025.

The President, in a letter to the Council of State seeking its advice on his choice, said Justice Baffoe-Bonnie had “served with diligence and integrity” and contributed “invaluably” to the development of the nation’s jurisprudence.

The President sited the long service and work experience of the senior justice for his qualification for the high position.

The advice of the Council of State on the choice is awaited, following which the nomination would proceed to Parliament for vetting and approval.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was called to the bar in 1983 after completing the Ghana Law School.

He traveled through the ranks of the nation’s judicial ladder and was appointed to the supreme court in 2008.

The nominee, when approved, would lead the judiciary through the present cloud involving the suspension of Justice Torkonoo, and safeguard the nation’s constitutional existence.

Counsel for the ousted chief Justice, Meanwhile, has stated that the motive for the Supreme Court writ was solely in the nation’s "constitutional interest”, and not to seek reinstatement as Chief Justice.
