President Mahama Engages Constitution Review Committee on Key Amendments

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has hosted the Constitution Review Committee for its maiden stakeholder engagement, marking a significant step in Ghana’s ongoing constitutional reform process.

Chaired by Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, the Committee met with the President to discuss key areas for amendment and seek his insights on necessary constitutional changes. During the engagement, the Committee also updated the President on their progress and highlighted areas where additional government support would be beneficial.

President Mahama commended the Committee for their dedication and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the review process. He underscored the need for critical amendments, particularly in the areas of:

  • Election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs)
  • Review of emoluments for Article 71 office holders
  • Decoupling ministerial appointments from Parliament

These proposed amendments, he emphasized, would strengthen Ghana’s governance framework and enhance democratic accountability.

The engagement marks a crucial step in the constitutional review process, with further consultations expected to shape the future of Ghana’s governance architecture.
